Tunesday: Lindsey Stirling

Happy Tunesday!
Only three more days till the weekend!

I just wanted to pop in and gush a little bit about how awesome Lindsey Stirling is (which is ALL of the awesome.)
For those of you who don't know her, YOU NEED TO!
She's a badass violinist rock star and she is by far one of the best performers I've ever seen.
Not to mention the fact that her videos are AWESOME.
It was impossible to pick just one so here's a few to pick from ;)

"Phantom of the Opera" covered by Lindsey Stirling

"Radioactive" covered by Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix (who are also awesome).

"Moon Trance" by Lindsey Stirling

There are a billion more, and if you loved these (you know you did ;) you NEED to go check out her YouTube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/user/lindseystomp

She's coming to Norfolk in June so I really REALLY hope I get to see her :)

Have a good one ;)

Day 7: Seven Obscure Facts about Hooch

Happy St. Paddy's Day everyone!!
I know it's technically after midnight, but I'm from Washington state and it's only 9:30 there ;)
For the last day of my 7 Days of Booze installment (since we're all probably liquored out by now, happy Monday btw) I've decided to fill your heads with random fun facts about alcohol :)

7 Obscure Facts About Hooch

1. It takes an average of 600 grapes to make one bottle of wine.

2. It is rumored that one of the main reasons FDR was elected president was because he pledged to put an end to prohibition.

3. Bourbon is the official liquor of the United States.

4. Winston Churchill's mother is known for creating The Manhattan.

5. People would use rum to clean their hair in the 1800's.

6. The first "toast"s took place in ancient Rome when it was customary to drop toasted bread into red wine to wish good health onto others.

7. It is believed that one of the Pilgrim's main motives for stopping at Plymouth Rock (as opposed to continuing to their desired destination) was because they were out of alcohol (and other supplies).

I hope you've enjoyed this installment over the last week :)
I plan to do something very similar for other holidays (particularly Halloween :)
But don't worry, I'll have WAY more to talk about.

I hope everyone had a wonderful / safe holiday!
See you soon :)

Day 6: Adult Headbands (Drunken Edition)

Sorry I didn't post yesterday, I was playing the Boondock Saints Drinking Game ;)
(Told you it was an unstoppable tradition!)
Tonight, I'm going to try to explain the rules I've established to add a new twist to an old game.

Adult Headbands (Drunk Edition)

My friends and I LOVE playing games.
Charades, Cards Against Humanity, Drunk Jenga, I could go on. But one day after discovering "Head's Up" (a game that Ellen Degeneres plays on her show all the time, and it's an app now too!) I knew I had to come up with a boozy variation.

We started with a sober (well, not sober, but drinking wasn't part of the actual game) version, and it was very VERY bare bones. Basically we all wrote something down on a note card (no theme, no category, just random people and things) passed them to another player and just went for it. We each took turns holding up our cards (with no idea what they said) and asked yes or no questions to try to figure out what was written.

After a 10 minute round with just one guesser, we realized that the game needed a little more structure. So we introduced categories. We would do things like "known sex addicts" and "famous people you would never want to see naked." We decided to keep the yes or no question rule (gotta keep some of the challenge alive), but we would also give subtle hints to the guesser (like if they had Richard Nixon, someone could say something along the lines of "good thing you aren't a crook" and stuff like that) if they were stuck.
It's really fun :)

Okay, now that you've got the basic idea, here's how to make it boozy:

What you will need:
note cards
a stopwatch
hard liquor

Split into either partners or teams:

I feel that teams work better simply because it increases the chances of someone knowing who or what is written on your forehead. (If you were playing in pairs and your partner wasn't familiar with what they other team had written down for you, you'd be totally fucked.)
Once you've established teams (or pairs), pass around a notepad and jot down categories (you'll need 5 categories per group, this will ensure you won't run out of topics before the end of the game). Try to pick topics that everyone is familiar with, it's no fun when the guesser has no idea who or what they're supposed to be.
Once you have your categories, start with round one.
First, have everyone write a note card that's related to the first category (Team A writes cards for Team B and so on).
Now exchange your team's cards with the others, keeping each of them face down.

Start with Team A.
Each team member will take their turn by lifting their card to their forehead and guessing what is written on their card.

Example: The guesser has Justin Beiber. Am I a male? Yes. Am I an actor? Not really. Am I a singer? Yes. Am I in a band? No. Am I popular right now? Yes. Do a lot of people hate me? Yeah. Am I Justin Beiber? YEP.

Team B will keep time while Team A answers their teammate's questions.
Once all of Team A has gone and figured out what is written on their cards, record their time and let Team B take their turn (and so on).

The point of each round is for all your teammates to guess their cards as quickly as possible. The team that takes the longest loses that round and has to take a shot.
The first team that has to take 5 shots loses :)

Obviously there has to be subtly to the hints. You can't do "rhymes with..." or anything that will make it totally obvious, it ruins the fun! Since there isn't a ref (I guess there could be if you had an odd number of people and a particularly competitive bunch), it's really up to the opposing players to decide what's too obvious. But at the same time you can't call foul on every clue. Just find a balance, they're your friends for god's sake.

The only problem we've noticed is that it is common to have repeats of the same people/things.

Example: Last time we had "known sex addicts" as a category and we had 2 Charlie Sheen's AND 2 Tiger Woods's.

It's not really that much of a problem, but you should still do your best to come up with original ideas.
If you find that you'd rather not have repeats, you can always write the note cards one team at a time. (Team B writes the cards for Team A, Team A takes their turn and then writes the note cards for Team B and so on.)
Just make sure if you decide to do it this way to alternate which team goes first in the next round. This will save Team A from always having to come up with ideas that haven't already been picked.
^^I hope that makes sense, I had a hell of a time wording that...

But yeah, that's what I've come up with :) I haven't played it this way with my friends yet but I'm really hoping we get a chance to soon. If you guys play before I do let me know how it goes :)

See you laterrrr ;)

Day 5: Tips for Curing a Hangover

I'm no alky,
but like so many others I do enjoy knocking a few back when I'm out spending time with my friends. We usually do pretty well with recognizing our limits, but of course everyone occasionally has one of those nights that ALWAYS turns into one of those mornings (especially March 18).
Hopefully this post will help you prepare for the day after the drunkest holiday of the year.

Tips for Curing a Hangover

I found this diagram on Pinterest not too long ago and think it's perfect for this post.

Above is a diagram describing exactly what's going on in your body when you experience the wretchedness of a hangover (left) and ways to ease some of the discomfort (right). Some of the remedies are obvious (pain killers, water, sports drinks) while others are things that I would have never thought of (gimme a break, I'm hungover.)

But in actuality the best way to cure a hangover is avoiding one altogether.
It can be as easy as alternating alcoholic drinks and water while you're out and about (drink a beer, have a water, have a martini, more water, ect.), to making sure you eat before and while you drink (bread is awesome).

Here's what I do:
When I know that I'm over the line, right before I go to bed I drink a GIGANTIC cup of water and take an Advil (I'm talking like a soup bowl sized mug of water). Once I get it all down I usually feel pretty miserable and like my stomach may explode, but I always feel great the next morning. I'll continue to drink water and Gatorade the next day, but it's really just a precaution.

People swear by all kinds of different remedies, but this has proven to be the most successful hangover relief for me. Obviously the best way to avoid a hangover is just to make sure you don't drink too much, but as we all know, shit happens.

Hopefully you won't need this, but it's here just in case ;)

See you tomorrow!
**Please keep in mind that I am not a doctor and these are just amateur suggestions to avoid a nasty next morning. Everyone is different, so therefore not all hangovers can be cured the same way.**
***Also, this post is not meant to promote excessive drinking in any way. Please drink responsibly.***

Pot O' Gold Cupcakes

Pot O' Gold Cupcakes

I made these for St. Paddy's Day (along with a batch of Chocolate Stout Cupcakes).

I don't know why but when I was shopping for ingredients I just knew I had do something rainbow-y.
I see these tutorials all the time about layering different colors of batter and it turns out that it really is as easy as it looks.

I made the rainbows and pots of gold with colored chocolate.
They turned out alright (I'm a bit of a perfectionist :/ ), but I think next time I'll use sprinkles instead of food coloring (like those sticky sand art pictures from back in the day.) It's just too hard to make "red" white chocolate. It's a fucking catch 22. The amount of food coloring required to turn the chocolate red (not pink) messes with the consistency of the chocolate, making it impossible to work with. I'm sure someone knows how to do it, but I've yet to discover the secret.

And yes I know, Candy Melts. Sadly I'm all out :(

But yeah :) Overall I'm happy with them. When I try again I'll post a tutorial :)

Have a good one!

Day 4: Chocolate Stout Cupcakes w/ Irish Cream Frosting

I've already talked a little bit about my cupcake madness on here,
but sadly I haven't gotten around to post any recipes or designs that I've done yet.
Well, this week has been a baking week, so prepare yourself for cakes in cups.
Let's start with one of my favorite found recipes :)

Chocolate Stout Cupcakes w/ Irish Cream Frosting

http://www.6bittersweets.com/2013/03/chocolate-guinness-stout-cupcakes-with.html

^^Seriously, if you are a fellow baker (or chef, or cook, or someone who eats food), you NEED to check out this lady's blog.
She has a HUGE recipe index and beautiful food photography.

I found this recipe back in October when I was trying to find a boozy cupcake recipe for one of my co-workers. THEY'RE AWESOME. I don't like cake, but I love these. I've made these twice, and they are always a hit.

I've posted a link to the recipe just below the picture above.
I actually just made a batch for St. Paddy's Day and decided to dye the frosting green (real original, right? ;) and drizzle them with dark chocolate.

Enjoy! :)

Day 3: Drunk Jenga

What's more fun than board games from childhood?
DRUNKEN BOARD GAMES FROM CHILDHOOD! :D

Drunk Jenga

Let me start by saying that the picture above is way sexier than the Drunk Jenga that my friends and I play.
I wasn't fully prepared for today's post so I had to put it in the google :S my b guys.
But other than some of the naughty planks ("make me want it"? christ.), the game is exactly the same as the version my friends and I play.
Don't get me wrong, if you want to play the risque version go for it. Let your freak flag fly.

It's exactly the same as regular Jenga, but with each piece you have to perform a task.
My friends made a set a while back and it's so much fun.

Examples for planks:
"Give Three": Puller gives three drinks.
"Take Three": Bet you can guess this one ;)
"Ladies" & "Gents"
"Crazy Eyes": The puller now has the power of the crazy eyes. If they are able to make eye contact with another player and jerk their head and widen their eyes, the player has to drink.

"Thumb Master": whoever draws it is the Thumb Master and whenever they put their thumb on the table the last person to do the same has to drink.
"Categories": whoever pulls this plank comes up with some sort of category (Tim Burton movies, types of stout, holidays, ect.) Then you go around in a circle and each person says something that belongs in that category. The first person to hesitate (5 seconds or more) has to drink.
"Rhyme Time": A lot like categories but instead the puller picks a word. You got around in a circle and the first person who hesitates or says a word that isn't real has to drink.
"Lost in Translation": whoever pulls this one has now lost the ability to speak English (or any other actual language.) They now can only communicate with gestures, meaningless babble and the help of their translator (picked by the puller).
"Make a Rule": again, pretty self explanatory.

There's a lot more, but the point is to get creative and come up with your own :)
Oh, and whoever knocks the tower down has to chug their drink, and that's pretty much it :)

Have fun!

Tunesday: My Lovely Little Alyssa

heyyyyyyy ;)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7YPuYGANxA

I know I usually post the actual video, but for some reason I'm having issues getting the video through blogger. I've provided the link to her cover though :)

Remember Alyssa? :)
She's INCREDIBLY talented. She's been an amazing singer since I can remember and started playing the ukulele a little over a year ago (for her little hands! :). She posts covers on her youtube channel all the time and they are ALWAYS awesome.
This Tunesday is all about her :)

I chose this one in particular because of how beautiful and happy she looks.
I'm not saying she's an unhappy person, but her performance in this video just radiates good vibes.
Probably has nothing to do with the guy who inspired the cover ;)

Anyway, check out her covers and enjoy :)

See you later!

Day 2: Irish Coffee

My husband is a total Hibernophile.
(Someone who is very fond of Irish culture and customs, I had to google it.)
Well, at least he is when it comes to alcohol. He loves Guinness, Murphy's, and most of all: good old fashioned Irish coffee.
As a bit of a coffee snob (I'm from Washington state, it's totally okay that I'm addicted to Starbucks), I always find myself turning him down when he offers to make me a cup of his favorite caffeinated hooch.
But never fear, I believe that I have found a way to enjoy this Sunday breakfast tradition.

Irish Coffee Recipes: Manly & Girly

Bryan likes his Irish coffee strong and bitter, pretty much the exact same way he likes his normal coffee.

Here's his recipe:
Fill a mug 3/4 full with black coffee.
Add a shot of Irish whiskey (or a shot an a half, that's all you)

Some people will add sugar, but Bryan usually just drinks it this way.
He'll add some Bailey's to it now and again, but for the sake of this post, we're going to stick to his manliest mix ;)

Me, personally, I prefer my coffee to be creamy and flavorful (and by flavorful I mean including multiple kinds of chocolate ;).

Here's the recipe I've come up with:
Fill a mug 1/2 full with coffee.
Add half a shot of Irish whiskey.
Add a shot of Bailey's.
Add a tablespoon of Hersey's syrup.
**Optional: Add a tablespoon of white chocolate syrup.**
Mix it all together.
I'm not a huge fan of whipped cream, but adding a dollop on top will definitely help the girly cause ;)

Please drink responsibly :)

See you tomorrow!

Day 1: The Boondock Saints Drinking Game

Since I've moved to Virginia, my friends and I have started celebrating St. Paddy's Day properly (probably due to the fact that I turned 21 a month after I got here ;) We do a lot of different things, but there's one tradition that we know we can never skip:

The Boondock Saints Drinking Game

The Boondock Saints is one of my all time favorite movies.
(yes, I do have a few other favorites, but this one's legit.)

So it should be no surprise that this is a cannot miss St. Paddy's Day custom.
Care to join the fun?
Awesome :)

There are two ways to play, the complicated way and the straight forward way.

The complicated way:

Drink every time:
Conor and Murphy do something in unison.
Someone starts speaking a different language.
Someone gets shot (and dies).
Smecker says something shitty.

Waterfall when:
Conor and Murphy recite the family prayer.

Smecker listens to his classical music.

Finish your drink for:
"THERE WAS A FIRE FIGHT!"
Smecker in drag.

The straight forward way:
Drink every time they say "fuck". That's all.
(This is how my friends and I play ;)

It may not be the classiest of drinking games, but shit it's fun :)
AND the movie's available instantly on Netflix, so all you need is booze!

See you tomorrow!

7 Days of Booze: Introduction

Hello everyone :)
In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, I've decided to do a little post series about one the holiday's most important traditions: alcohol.

Over the next 7 days I'll post recipes, games, fun facts and other miscellaneous things about the hard stuff, just in time for the festivities :)

See you tomorrow:)

**PLEASE drink responsibly and NEVER EVER drink and drive.**

Tunesday: Payphone Cover

hey guyssss ;)

I just got a new microphone for my computer so I finally got around to recording a new cover :)
I decided on "Payphone" by Maroon5, a song I've been practicing for a while.
It's nothing special, but it was still really fun to do and I hope you enjoy it :)

See you soon :)

30 Day Photo Challenge: The Bucket

Day 30:
a picture of the most important thing on your bucket list

Sadly, this is kind of an anti-climatic end to our 30 Day Challenge, considering I've already talked about the most important things on my bucket list. But the greatest one by far is writing a book.

I have so many stories in my head.
Seriously, my brain is full of characters and plot twists and random dialogue.

At this point it's really just a matter of getting them on paper.
But if this challenge has done anything, it's lit a fire under me to actually get on it.

It's so easy to procrastinate with something like this.
There are so many deadlines in life, so many responsibilities that we owe to other people.
Our families, our bosses, our friends, it feels like everything is always in demand.
So the things that we do for ourselves are usually put on the back burner and saved until "we have the time".
But guess what? You will NEVER have the time if you don't make the time.
We always think that we're working for something, some sort of time when things will make sense and we'll have all this time to do whatever we want.
(And then we realize that that's what retirement is all about;)

If I keep waiting for "spare time", I'll never finish a book.
So, here it goes... as of today I'm going to make a point of working on my story at least once a day, even if it's just a paragraph or two. It may not be great, but it's better than what I'm doing now.
Wish me luck ;)

Honorable Mentions:
Seeing the Northern Lights.
Petting a manatee.
Owning a successful bakery.
Master the guitar.
Travel through time. (only kind of kidding o,O)

What's #1 on your bucket list?

See you later :)

30 Day Photo Challenge: Nostalgia

Day 29:
a picture of your favorite picture from high school

Another impossible question.
How am I supposed to pick a favorite picture from high school?
Unlike so many others, I LOVED high school.
Not in a "I'm so popular and loved by everyone, it only goes down from here" sort of way (which is sadly a real thing), but in a "life is never going to be this fun and simple again" sort of way.
I was fortunate enough to not have to deal with too many bullies or rumors, with very limited teenage heartache.

High school was a time when I got to see my best friends every day, a time when I didn't have any real responsibility. Not to mention the fact that we were allowed to act ridiculous because we were just "acting our age" ;) It was awesome, how could I pinpoint a favorite memory?

Luckily, my computer's lack of photos / living so far away from home (meaning I don't have access to my old photo albums or computer files), it made my decision a lot easier. Even luckier, this picture really was one of my favorite high school memories.

Above is (left to right) Christian, Kelli, Kevin and me (aka my choir crew ;) on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. We were singing at a competition and got to spend a few days taking in the sights.

We went to Alcatraz, the Windchester Mystery House, checked out a few of the piers and rode one of the cable cars :) It was one of my favorite trips by far, mostly thanks to my awesome tour buddy. Kevin still lives in WA so I never get to see him, but we rocked choir together and were really good friends before I moved.
Miss that guy :/

See you later :)

30 Day Photo Challenge: Songs Songs Songs

Day 29:
a picture of your favorite song

It's kind of tough to take a picture of a song.
It's tough to PICK a favorite song in the first place.

You've got your songs with the perfect melody, your songs with lyrics that make you feel like someone is stealing your thoughts, and songs that you hate that you love.

We love some songs for a few weeks, others for a few years and some that we love forever.
There are different genres, tones and moods, how the hell was I supposed to pick?

I wracked my brains for days; I even asked Alyssa for help.

Moments after I sent the message, I thought about the Moulin Rouge version of "Your Song", literally seconds before she messaged me with the same thing. She just gets me ;)

But then I started thinking about "Come What May", or the wonderful "Elephant Love Medley", and that one breath taking moment when Ewan McGregor sings about the hills being alive with music.

^^Skip to 00:28, this is the only video I could find of it, the rest of it is in Spanish :/

So, I've decided just to choose the entire Moulin Rouge soundtrack.
Alyssa and I watched it together when we were in Junior High (well, she showed it to me) and I fell in love.
With Baz, with the music, with the characters, with everything.
The movie was beautifully done, and even now (roughly 100 viewings later) it still gives me goosebumps.

And one of the great things about Moulin Rouge is even though it's a musical, all of it's music is generic enough (and mostly covers) to be enjoyed even outside of the movie.

But yeah. It's love<3

See you laterrr ;)

30 Day Photo Challenge: Bookie Book

Day 27:
a picture of the book you're reading right now

Sorry this is a couple days late ladies and gents,
especially since I don't have a good reason why :S

The book I'm currently reading is the life story of one Bruce Campbell, my man crush from Day 3.
Bryan got it for me for Christmas this last year ;)
I've only just started so I'm still reading about his early childhood, but I can already tell that it's going to be a great read.
Best part, I can totally hear his voice in my head when I'm reading ;)

I actually made a B&N run today and got a few other books that I'm hoping to read over the next few months. I got Dracula, Frankenstein and The Interpretation of Dreams.
Decided I haven't read enough classics ;)

What are you reading?

See you tomorrow!
